An archival giclée print of Mt. Rainier from the “Local Conditions” series.

Description

The print depicts an alpine meadow in full bloom. The view here is unusual—the viewer’s eye is at ground level, creating an illusion of scale. Snow-white avalanche lilies sway in the breeze, their delicate petals curling under themselves. Brilliant purple, wild lupines stand straight and tall as they hint at the thousands of others stretching to the horizon. And the craggy south face of Mt. Rainier towers in the background, its receding glaciers signaling the heat of high summer.

When pioneer James Longmire’s daughter-in-law, Martha, first saw this same view over 100 years ago, she exclaimed, “Oh, what a paradise!” And the name stuck. Today, the Paradise section of Mount Rainier National Park is the most frequently-visited part of the park; every year more than 1 million visitors come to Paradise to catch a glimpse of the famous wildflower meadows.

This 9 x 12 print is a reproduction of the original letterpress piece from “Local Conditions,” a series depicting Washington’s Mt. Rainier from a variety of different vantage points. (You can read more about the project here.) There are 15 different designs in the series; you can find all available prints here.

The original artwork was letterpress printed by hand on an antique Vandercook No. 4 press and then hand-painted with watercolor.

Paper size is 12 x 9.
